November 12, 2014, NEW YORK, NY – The Milstein Medical Asian American Partnership Foundation (MMAAP Foundation) hosted a successful bilateral Sino-US Symposium on October 10, 2014 at the conference center and museum of the prestigious Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital, Beijing, China. The MMAAP Foundation has expanded its research funding into five important areas of geriatrics (under the Irma and Paul Milstein Program for Senior Health), dermatology, hematology, translational medicine, and reproductive medicine. The purpose of this symposium was for the Foundation to meet and exchange ideas with government officials and leading Chinese experts as well as to explore areas of further collaboration that are critical for healthcare and medical research in China. Mr. Howard P. Milstein, the Chairman, and Sean X. Leng, MD PhD, the President of the MMAAP Foundation along with Mr. Milstein’s senior advisers had a private meeting with Liu Qian, MD, Vice Minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), Cao Xuetao, MD PhD, President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Suyang, MD, Vice President of the PUMC Hospital, and Wang Baoxi, MD, Director of the Dermatology Research Institute and Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Vice Minister Liu Qian praised Mr. Milstein for his effort and financial contribution to establish such an important medical foundation towards China and greater Asia. He expressed his satisfaction with the rapid progress that the MMAAP Foundation has made since its establishment. Mr. Milstein discussed and reached agreement with Vice Minister Liu and other leaders at the meeting on a number of topics including further collaboration in stem cell and regenerative medicine and registration of the MMAAP Foundation in China. Vice Minister Liu reiterated his continued support for the MMAAP Foundation and its significant contribution to the development of healthcare and medical research in China. Both Vice Minister Liu Qian and President Cao Xuetao gave important speeches at the symposium. The chairperson from each of the five expert panels gave an overview about current developments of his or her respective field of expertise in China. Several recipients of the MMAAP Foundation awards also gave a brief presentations about their funded research. Mr. Milstein responded to questions from the leading experts, and confirmed his commitment to supporting the MMAAP Foundation. The symposium was followed by a tour of the PUMC Hospital history museum and a formal dinner at the Peking Duck restaurant. Mr. Milstein was joined by his wife Mrs. Abby Milstein.
