2018 Grant Recipients

Dr. Lina Ma is an Associate Chief Physician in the Department of Geriatrics, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. She received her BA degree from Weifang Medical College in 2005. She obtained her MD in Geriatrics and PhD in Neurobiology from Capital Medical University in 2008 and 2015, respectively. She pursued post-doctoral research on frailty and resiliency at Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology in Johns Hopkins University from February 2017 to July 2018. She was awarded the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet Scholarship and was a visiting scholar in Innsbruck Medical University in Austria in 2014. Dr. Ma is a member of American Geriatrics Society (AGS), Geological Society of America (GSA), Chinese Geriatrics Society, International Society of Hypertension (ISH), European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council on Hypertension, and Beijing Neurodegenerative Disorders Society, and serves as the secretary of Beijing Neuroscience Association. She also works at Media and Communications Working Group in New Investigator Committee of ISH. Her contribution to science included clinical studies on frailty, disability and chronic diseases in old adults and translational research in translating basic aging related biological findings to clinical work. Her research provided evidence for both the epidemiology and risk factors of frailty in old Chinese population including validation of the frailty phenotype components, exploration of their association with biological markers, and development of a self-reported frailty tool specific for Chinese older adults, as well as development and utilization of a novel AD7C-NTP ELISA kit for detecting early Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment. Dr. Ma was invited to give oral presentations at the AGS Annual Meeting, Asia/Oceania Congress of International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), Annual European Meeting on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Protection (ESH), International Conference on Frailty & Sarcopenia Research (ICFSR), Great Wall International Congress of Cardiology, Annual Meeting of Chinese Diabetes Society, Chinese Cerebral Vascular Disease Conference, Chinese Annual Conference on Cognitive Impairment, Beijing Annual Meeting on Geriatrics, and Beijing Annual Conference on Clinical Epidemiology. As the first author, her recent publications include more than 20 peer-reviewed articles focusing on aging, frailty, and cognitive impairment in old adults in international journals such as Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (with total IF > 60). As principal investigator, she has more than 10 research grants including National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and Chinese Ministry of Education Project for the Humanities and Social Sciences. She has been awarded the AGS New Investigator Award, W. Leigh Thompson Excellence in Basic Research Postdoctoral Award Finalist in Johns Hopkins University, Doctoral Students National Scholarship by Ministry of Education in China, and Chinese Communist Youth League Medical Scholarship. She has also been awarded “Beijing Excellent Talent Project” and “Beijing Municipal Administration of Hospitals’ Youth Program Project”.

Dr. Suifeng Liu is an Associate Chief Physician and Assistant Professor at Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University. She received her MD and PhD from Xiangya Medical College of Central south University of gerontology. Her research focuses on clinical study and the mechanism of aging and age-related diseases, such as sarcopenia and frailty. As the principal investigator, Dr. Liu has completed one project from the National Natural Science fund of China and one project from the Health Department of Fujian Province. Now she is leading one project from the Natural Science Foundation of Fujian Province. Dr. Liu has published more than 10 scientific papers on English journals and core Chinese journals. She is a member of Chinese Geriatrics Society.

Dr. Jinbo Chen serves as the committee member and secretary of Wuhan society of Dermatology and of Wuhan Dermatologist Association. He also serves as associate profess of the dermatology department of Wuhan No.1 Hospital, the fourth affiliated Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He received his bachelor degree in clinical medicine from Tongji Medical College and his doctor degree in dermatology from Peking Union Medical College. He’s also the prost doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Jinbo has taken the role of research director for six research project and publicized more than 30 scientific research papers. He has also won awards including Bright Future Award (12th Annual meeting of China Dermatologist Association), Prize for the excellent paper (10th Annual meeting of China Dermatologist Association), Excellent Postgraduate Award (Chinese society of dermatology) and National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Dr. Yao Ke is an instructor and an attending physician in the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Stomatology, Fourth Military Medical University (FMMU). She received her M.D. degree of stomatology from Wuhan University in 2012 and her Ph.D. degree in dermatology from FMMU in 2017. She mainly focuses on the clinical and basic research of skin biology and mucocutaneous diseases, especially the molecular mechanism and targeted therapy for wound healing and autoimmune disorders. She has published several original peer-reviewed articles including two on Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The findings of the research were orally presented in Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) and European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) annual meeting. In 2017 and 2018, Dr. Ke received Travel Grant Award from ESDR and Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology (JSID), respectively. She also selected as the only one Chinese representative for the attendance of 2018 International Investigative Dermatology (IID) resident retreat program.

Professor Tong Chen is the director of Department of Hematology in Huashan Hospital, as well as the mentor for graduate students of Fudan University. She was an undergraduate of Shanghai Medicial University (Class of 1993) with a Clinical Medicine major and obtained her doctoral degree from Fudan University in 2006. From 2003 to 2005, she received research fellowship training in Center for Regenerative Medicine & Technology, Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School. She has majored in hematology for 20 years, treating the patients who are diagnosed as hematologic malignancies. Dr. Chen served as princial investigator of both clincal and basic studies, and got her research results published in high standard scientific journals, such as Nature Biotechnology, and Stem Cells. She was awarded the Outstanding Academic Leaders of Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Committee (2016), New Century Excellent Talents in University of China (2009), and Shanghai Pujiang Talents (2007). Being a physician-scientist in hematology field, she is consecutively interpreting pathophysiologic mechanism between bed-side and bench-side, not only on conventional therapy to reconstitute patients‘ normal hematopoiesis, but also for developing novel therapeutic target to treat hematologic disorders.

Dr. Liang Huang an associate professor in the Department of Hematology at Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. He obtained his doctor degree and completed his clinical training at Tongji Hospital, HUST. His research works are focused on NK cell neoplasms and chimeric antigen receptor T-Cell therapy. These works are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. He presented our clinic project, CAR-T cell cocktail therapy, in the ASH meeting of the year 2017 in Atlanta. His recent publications appear in the journals Cell Research, Blood Cancer Journal, leukemia & Lymphoma, International Journal of Hematology, etc.

Zhu Zhu, MD, PhD. Got PhD degree as the outstanding graduate of Fudan University in 2016; postdoctoral fellow at Comprehensive Stroke Center, University of California, Irvine at present. Specializes in young stroke and cerebral artery dissection with related paper published in Neurology, BMC Neurology, Journal of Neurological Sciences, etc. Completed one international grant as principle investigator and 3 projects as major researcher. Have won awards including “Junior Travel Grant of the European Stroke Conference and European Stroke Research Foundation”, “Special Award of Institute for US-China Neuroscience and Stroke Initiative”, “Outstanding resident of Shanghai in Resident Standardization Training program”, etc.

Dr. Nidan Qiao is a neurosurgeon at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University. His research work is centered on integrating innovative statistical approaches to neurosurgical and neuroendocrine diseases. His main project was about visual prognosis in patients with pituitary adenomas. He wrote several papers regarding this topic, which was published in Pituitary, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery and Journal of Clinical Neuroscience. He also gave several oral presentations at different international conferences, one of which was rated as the best article at the 15th annual meeting of the Chinese neurosurgical society. Recent years, another subject that Dr. Qiao has developed strong interests in was machine learning and deep learning. Broadly, Dr. Qiao’s research focus is applying machine learning and deep learning methodology in medical disease prediction and genomic prediction. He is also the member of Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Endocrine Society. Dr. Qiao received his M.D. in Clinical medicine from Fudan University. He is now in MMSCI program at Harvard Medical School and doing clinical research in Massachusettes General Hospital.

Yang Yu, Ph.D, is an Associate Professor of Reproductive Center at Peking University Third Hospital. Dr. Yu received his Ph.D degree from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. He mainly focused on the risk evaluation and the improvement of assisted reproductive technologies. He has published more 60 scientific articles on the international peer-reviewed journals, including Cell Research, PNAS, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, and Antioxidants & Redox Signaling. He hosted 8 research grants from Chinese government, including 4 National Natural Science Foundation. Based on his achievements, he has been awarded as Beijing outstanding young scholars and Science & Technology New Star of Beijing, and also awarded National Science & Technology Progress Award (Second Class) as a team core member. Dr. Yu is a lifetime member of Chinese Biological Investigators Society (CBIS), and acts as an academic editor in the journal of PLoS ONE.
